How to Sell on Whatnot: A Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
Whatnot sellers did more than $8B in live sales in 2025. Here's how to apply, what Whatnot charges after the September 2026 fee change, how shipping and payouts work, and how to run your first show.

Whatnot claims about 60% of a $22B live shopping market across North America and Europe (the company's own estimate). Sellers did more than $8B in live sales in 2025, the company raised $545M at a $20B valuation in August 2026, and it says more than 650,000 people join every week. It started in collectibles, but fashion is now one of its biggest categories, with brands like Dolls Kill, Invicta and Callaway selling directly. Here is how to get set up and run your first show, step by step, based on Whatnot's own seller documentation.
Key takeaways
- Approval is fast. Whatnot says many sellers unlock seller access within minutes; some categories need extra approval.
- US fees start at 8% commission plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing. Since September 2026, commission drops in tiers for high-volume sellers.
- Buyers pay shipping by default, calculated from shipping profiles you set per item or per show.
- You sell in three formats: auctions (standard or Sudden Death), Buy It Now, and giveaways.
- Payouts follow delivery for standard sellers, then typically land in 1–2 business days.
Step 1: Apply to sell on Whatnot
In the app, tap + Sell, then Get Started, and answer a short set of questions about your experience and what you plan to sell. Per Whatnot's application guide:
- You must live in a country where Whatnot supports selling. That covers the US, Canada, the UK and several EU markets; Whatnot listed the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium in early 2025, with Australia next. Check the application page for the current list.
- Sellers aged 13–17 need a parent's or guardian's permission and a separate application.
- Many sellers unlock seller access within minutes. If your application needs more review, Whatnot emails next steps.
- Some categories are gated — such as Luxury Bags & Accessories and Wholesale — and need extra approval even after you can sell.
Brands use the same application; Whatnot has no separate brand path. Brands at larger volume can talk to Whatnot's own business sales team. Shopify merchants can connect with Whatnot's native Shopify app, launched in 2026, which syncs products, inventory and orders.
Step 2: Understand Whatnot seller fees
Whatnot charges no listing fee. You pay on what sells:
- Commission: 8% base rate on the item price — not on shipping or tax. Since September 2026, commission drops in tiers based on your sales over the previous four weeks, starting at $15,000 in four-week sales and going as low as 3% for custom-rate, top-volume sellers. At $500K+ in four-week sales, published rates range from 4% to 6.5% depending on category.
- Coins & Money: 4% commission.
- Payment processing (US): 2.9% + $0.30 per order, charged on the full amount the buyer pays, including shipping and tax.
Fees differ outside the US. Check your country's fee page in Seller Hub before pricing.
Step 3: Set up shipping
Buyers pay shipping by default. Whatnot calculates it from shipping profiles — each item's packed weight and size — which also set the available carrier services, generate your label and bundle a buyer's wins together (shipping setup). Live-show orders follow the show's shipping settings; orders outside shows follow the product's profile.
In the US, options include USPS Ground Advantage, USPS Flat Rate, and UPS Ground Saver for packages over 5 lb. Some sellers can offer free or discounted shipping by covering all or part of the cost. Smart Bundling automatically combines one buyer's purchases from a show.
Ship fast. Whatnot expects orders shipped within two business days, and shipping speed feeds both your account health and how often Whatnot shows your streams.
Step 4: Create listings and schedule your show
In Seller Hub → Shows → Schedule a Show, set the name, date, time, category and main selling format. You can set a repeat schedule and adjust shipping per show. Whatnot recommends scheduling about a week out so you can promote it and viewers can bookmark it.
Then create listings in the format that fits each item:
- Auctions. You set the starting bid and duration. Once started, an auction can't be cancelled, and if nobody bids the item doesn't sell. In a standard auction, late bids extend the timer; Sudden Death adds no time and ends at the clock (auction rules).
- Buy It Now. A fixed price, available while stock lasts, during or outside shows. "Reserve for Live" holds a listing for your show only.
- Giveaways. Up to five minutes, winner picked at random by Whatnot, and you ship the prize no matter who wins. Paid-entry raffles are not allowed (giveaway rules).
- Pre-bids. Auction listings created before the show can collect pre-bids that apply automatically when the auction starts.
Step 5: Set up your stream
Whatnot's production guide treats a phone as the easiest way to start — ideally in a phone cage holding a light, a mic and a power bank, on a tripod. Its advice on upgrades:
- Lighting first. Two-point lighting is "your first real upgrade," and Whatnot prefers it to a ring light, which gives flat, harsh images and reflections.
- Audio second. Clear sound matters more than a better camera.
- OBS when you're ready. Whatnot supports streaming from OBS through a stream key, for multi-camera shows and overlays.
Run a private test stream before your first public show.
Step 6: Go live, then fulfill
Pre-load your listings, go live on schedule, greet viewers and keep the pace up. When the show ends, print labels and ship within two business days.
Payouts: for standard US sellers, earnings begin processing once the carrier scan shows the order as delivered, then reach your balance within about four hours. You start the payout yourself, and it typically arrives in 1–2 business days (payments). Early Payout sellers are paid once the label is generated.
What Whatnot will and won't let you sell
Whatnot prohibits adult items, explosives and fireworks, alcohol, injectables, expired items and hateful items, among others. Firearms, parts and ammunition are banned, and knives can only be sold within the US, Canada or Germany. Check the policy page for your category before listing.
Seller standards that keep your account healthy
Whatnot has no formal seller-level ladder, but it tracks performance closely. Sustained on-time scan rates far below 80%, cancellation-free rates below 99% or refund-free rates below 97% hurt your account. Hit higher bars for three months and you can qualify for Premier Shop, which brings better visibility and priority support. From September 2026, US sellers also handle missing, damaged and late-order requests directly under Seller Provided Support.
